Only a REAL redhead would understand…

I feel lucky that I was born a redhead.  I’ve never wanted to have any other color.  I dyed my hair once, just out of curiosity, and hated it.  I missed being stopped in the streets by people telling me how beautiful my hair color is or asking if it was real.  I missed being unique (we make up only 4% of the world’s population).  This feeling isn’t mutual among all redheads…

I read an article today by Katherine Bindley about the fact that being a redhead is a love-hate relationship.  I guess this is true, to some extent.  I did have a hard time when I was traveling in South America, with just how much I stood out.  I also stood out in my class growing up – teased & bullied constantly.  Yet, I’d still never trade my hair color in for any other.  Bindley got it right in her article – only a fellow redhead would understand.  Only a fellow redhead would understands what it was like to grow up feeling like Rudolph, only having that bulb on the top of their head.  I get annoyed with people who pride themselves on being a redhead, when it really comes from a bottle.  They just don’t get it.  I’m all for people coloring their hair, but just don’t pretend that it’s natural…Don’t pretend you’ve dealt with standing out your whole life.

Unlike Bindley, I’d love to have little ginger babies (don’t worry honeysome day).  I’d love to pass on this uncommon color on to a child.  Being unique, once you embrace it, makes you stronger.

100% natural.

Natural: Lindsey Lohan (clearly one who stopped embracing it, as she’s now a bleach blonde), Julianne Moore, Conan O’Brien, Queen Elizabeth I, Rupert Grint, George Washington, Florence Nightingale, Ron Howard, Carol Burnett & Molly Ringwald.

Fake, but somehow get categorized as a redhead: Lucille Ball (this one makes me sad…I’d have loved for her to have been real), Christina Hendricks (she wears it well), Amy Adams, Alyson Hannigan, Wynnona & Naomi Judd (duh), Geena Davis & Nicole Kidman is up for debate if she’s real or dyed…

Earth Day

Since today is Earth Day, here are 5 (easy) things you can do to help ensure that the World is a better place for future generations:

1. Compost

2. Reuse (buy second-hand clothes/furniture & reuse jars/plastic bags/containers)

3. Buy & grow organic foods

4. Walk or bike instead of driving, whenever possible

5. Buy/use energy efficient products (light bulbs, computers, appliances) & unplug electronics when they aren’t in use

Happy Spring?

Looking out the window yesterday, I would never have guessed it was the first day of Spring… Snow was falling, the winds were blowing & it was in the 30′s here in Vermont.  Now that it is technically “Spring” I’m ready for sunshine, flowers to start blooming & no more snow!  We’ve had some record-breaking storms here in Vermont this year, so I’m just about ready for Winter to be over (after I go skiing this weekend)…

Happy Pi Day!

A couple years ago my old roommate and I hosted a Pi Day celebration- we had all our friends bring pie and we played “Pin the Pi on the Equation.”  A local bakery held a contest that they would give a pie away to anyone who could recite the first 100 numbers of Pi.  Unfortunately, they didn’t exactly take into consideration that the shop was right between MIT and Harvard campuses, so they ended up running out of pies after only a few hours.  A friend of mine, who had been practicing for days, sadly missed out on a free pie and came to the party empty-handed.  My roommate felt bad for him & later baked him one for his hard work.  To this day he is still able to recite most of numbers!

“Pin the Pi on the Equation”

Tonight, to keep the fun Pi Day memory alive, I’ll be making a quiche and cherry pie!

Happy Pi Day everyone!

Daylight Savings!

Sorry for the lack of postings this week, I’ve been horribly sick!  I guess it’s that time of year… It is also that time of the year to set your clocks AHEAD!

A little friendly reminder that this weekend is DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!!

I was scheduling a conference call today with some folks in London for next week & thought to myself,  ”Does London observe Daylight Savings, too?”  Well, yes they do, but not at the same time as the US and Canada…weird, huh?

I read up on this fact in an article in The Windsor Star, which also has a few fun facts about Daylight Savings!

Truths About Life

This post is a little different from my normal food, finds, travel & design, but I felt that I had to share…

A friend of mine posted this article, 88 Important Truths I’ve Learned About Life, on her Facebook page & some of the lessons/insights really struck a chord within me.  While I don’t completely agree with all of the 88 “truths” and I suggest that you take a look at the list yourself, here are a few that I wanted to share with you:

2. It is a hundred times more difficult to burn calories than to refrain from consuming them in the first place. This is so true.  Ohhh self- control…

7. Children are remarkably honest creatures until we teach them not to be. I think it all starts with the lesson of telling a white lie…

15. Nobody has it all figured out. No one.

22. Humans cannot destroy the planet, but we can destroy its capacity to keep us alive.  And we are. So sad.

24. Those who complain the most, accomplish the least. It really is often easier/faster to just get something done than complain about it!

41. Revenge is for the petty and irresponsible. And can often be dangerous, too!

42. Getting truly organized can vastly improve anyone’s life. I always feel so much better & have a much better grasp on things when I am organized!

47. If you aren’t happy single, you won’t be happy in a relationship. I’ve given this advice to a friend before- love yourself!

52. Posture and dress change profoundly how you feel about yourself and how others feel about you, like it or not. There’s a reason why people say “dress for success!”

66. Most of what children learn from their parents isn’t taught on purpose. This one made me laugh.  So true.

78. There is no point finishing a book you aren’t enjoying. Life is too short for that. Swallow your pride and put it down for good, unfinished.  I actually said this to my boyfriend last night!  Some books just aren’t meant to be read by everyone.  To each their own!

79. There is no correlation between the price of a brand of batteries and how long they last. Interesting!
